Mercredi/Wednesday 23.11.2011

Les employés me connaissent et me sourient.

Funny how the daylight is offset here compared to what we have at home. Here it is light at 6 o'clock in the morning and dark at 4:30 pm.
Today is the coldest day we've had since we came here: - 5 º in the morning and - 9 ° in the evening. The nights are even cooler: - 12 º. But well dressed, it is okay, the cold is dry and there is no wind.
Same routine as the other day in the morning, we have our habits now. Blog and then I walk in the campus to take pictures. I walk 45 minutes, it is cold but ok. I then do some shopping in the small supermarket nearby. The employees know me and smile at me. I buy a pizza for one lira (3 kr or 27 cents of an euro). The filling is limited but for that price, man can not be too demanding.
After lunch I go into town to make a purchase, we decided with Jens. I will not say more because it's a surprise. I'll tell you later.  I manage to do it, the man in the shop speaks a little English. I also wanted to visit the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and Ethnography, but it was closed. Short walk in town. The main streets are wide and straight but there are also many small narrow streets lined with small shops. The town once had 400 fountains, Mehmet told me, but there are no more than 40 now. A tin cup is attached to a chain and people drink water from the fountain. It comes from the mountain and is said to be better than city water. I go and go, I walk one hour and forty five minutes. I ask for a glass of tea (çay is pronounced chay) when I arrive at the residence. It is good to drink something warm.
When Jens comes back, we decided to go out to dinner. The restaurant downstairs is good but we want to try something else. We leave in the cold and go to one of the oldest and quite chic restaurant in Erzurum. Lonely Planet describes it as having an "old fashioned charm." It is also the only (or one of the few) restaurant serving alcohol. Very good service, old fashioned, and good food. The clientele is mainly composed of men, not too young and a little overweight. On many tables man can see a bottle of raki, the Turkish aniseed liquor. We spoil ourselves: appetizer, main course, dessert and a beer each. The note is up to 68 liras...! (204 kr or € 25.5) for two. We return by walking fast, it's - 9 º. I have walked more than 10 km today, good exercise!
I have been thinking of making a comment for a long time, but until now I had so much to say that I have not yet done it: Previously, the main square, where the Lala Pasha Mosque stands, was covered with tall trees, chestnut trees, more than hundred years old. The guide book they gave me at the tourism information still shows picture of the place covered with trees. A few years ago, the municipality decided to cut all the trees, supposedly, to give a better view of the monuments. And here, the trees are having a hard time to grow. I find it criminal (perhaps a bit strong but I get angry). Some people tried to protest, but without success. How can they do something so stupid?
